danger for his people and sought a safe
refuge for them. He pinioned NourTar the Giant with his spear creating
the walls that protect, the fields that nourish and the springs the
warm what is now the city of Joranit. He built the Ramp and led his
tribe over the walls.
Several times
during the Silver Age the Lesser Ice assailed Joranit and several
time Joran threw them down from the Prow using his power and that
of NourTar. The Lesser Ice was the name of a great host of uz, giants
and hollri that attacked the coast when the new light of Kargzant
rose.
Joran was slainf
by Urgak the Younger on the headland while defending his people
from the ice troll's attack. Joran's cousin Kalikos fell from the
sky and smote Urgak slaying him there.

The Jorani elected
Jastan Son of Joran to replace his father. Jastan was a wise leader
who showed his people how to catch the Kentryan Whale. The herds
grew and the people prospered.
By 111050 the
Old City has been built and walled in. Prow Keep became the first
fortress within the outer walls.
The Greenwood
expansion reached the walls of Joranit in 111223. The city saw rapid
growth between 111220 and 111225 with Pelandan refugees fleeing
the rapidly moving forests. The new residents built the Quarter
of Statues.
111230 -
111330 The Naverian Period
In 111230 the cream of the Lenshi noble families were slain in battle
against the southern barbarians. Cerrugreg the Just was the Red
King of Naveria. His armies marched north and subjugated Darsen
and Joranit. Court records from the time say that 10,000 slaves
were used to bridge the Chasm and built a ramp over the walls. Prow
Keep was rebuilt in the Naverian style and a Red King installed
to rule the city.
The Naverians
cut through the wall near Fishertown and built the Ox Gate there.
Until then, the only way into the city had been over The Ramp, which
was steep and difficult for wagons.
In the reign
of Red King Syros came the Year with no Summer. The winter's snows
had only just melted from the fields around the city when the first
storm of winter came howling across the White Sea to blanket the
newly planted fields yet again. That year was a hard one for the
Karasali with many hollri attacks and many hungry people.
In 111274 the
Red King NalReanus sponsored many carvers and artists to at his
court. He built an amphitheatre in the Quarter of Statues, public
baths below the headland and staged chariot races on the plain.

In 111330, Emperor
Erraibdavu the Conqueror seized upon a minor diplomatic confrontation
to declare war on Naveria. The Emperor marched into Karasal, his
phalanxes crushed the Naverian host and then laid siege to Joranit.
A ferocious battle was fought outside the harbour and the Dara Happan
galleys, led by Veragash the Snapper of Alkoth, routed the Karasali.
After a long siege Erriabdavu sent the Quartz Phalanx over the great
walls and sacked the city.
By 111428 the
Gbaji wars were going poorly for the Empire. Emperor Anirestyu began
a fortification programme for every city in the realm. In Joranit,
he ordered new towers built on the outer walls and a breakwater
to ward the harbour. The Overseer built the Dara Happan Quarter,
started the ziggurat to Yelm, and moved into his new palace on the
plain. By 111430 city's fortifications has been completed. A rapidly
growing population required more housing and the Overseer created
The Slope for the poor and the Merchant Quarter for the traders.
The ziggurat was finished in 111440.
With the fall
of Nysalor and the subjugation of the Empire by the barbarians,
Joranit was largely left alone. No enemy host marched into Karasal,
no foreigner sat on the Overseer's throne, and few tax collectors
came from Raibanth. The Overseer extended his influence throughout
the coastal plain and managed to largely protect the Karasali from
those chaotic times.
111653 -
111736 The Spolite Period
In 111653 the Empire of Gloom flowed across Peloria and enveloped
Joranit. With the aid of their dark magic the Spolites passed around
the walls and seized the city in the night. Lord Brevascar the Northron
was the first Spolite Overseer. His first action was to bury the
old Overseer alive and then sack the Dara Happan Quarter. Lord Brevascar
built the Black Tower from which he ruled all of Karasal in the
King's name. To facilitate the movement of the Gloom's forces, Brevascar
carved the Dark Gate through the basalt of the walls.
The years of
the occupation were not kind ones to Joranit. Many of the city's
riches were plundered, her people taken to fight in the Empire's
wars and her daughters sacrificed on the bloody altars of Gloom.
111736 - 111871 The Karasal Period
In 111736 the people of Joranit threw off the dark oppression of
Spol. Karas Brightface led the revolt during the Spolite High Holy
Day. The ceremonies ended with the Overseer sacrificed upon his
own altar and his band of Knight-Killers burned in their barracks.
When the fires had been put out, Karas ascended the ancient throne
of Joran and Jastan and took up the Staff of Rule.
Karas rebuilt
Anirestyu's gate on the Ramp turning it into a forbidding gate-keep.
The king invited the Shield of Peldre, the military leader of that
city to Joranit to create a proper phalanx - the Kentryan Wall -
to serve his kingdom.
Under Karas
and his successors Joranit flourished again. Trade from east and
west poured into the harbour and his kingdom expanded at the expense
of the collapsing Spolites. His final victory came at Graclodont
where his Harpooners scattered the Spolite horse and the Kentryan
Wall smashed their centre.
In 111825 the
Dara Happan ally, Korer invaded Karasal and besieged Joranit. Their
siege failed when King Tiras the Kraken defeated their fleet and
broke the blockade. Unfortunately the eastern half of the kingdom
was lost. In 111870 war broke out again between Korer and Karasal
when the Trader Princes of Birin took to pirating Jorani whalers.
Fighting raged across the entire kingdom. This time King Falkersh
the Unready couldn't break the Korer naval blockade - even the Kraken
failed after a priest of Horriblis Primus defeated it - and the
city surrendered after a siege of 99 days.
The city was
again briefly besieged in 111930 by Karasali troops but stood resolute.
111871 -
112070 The Korer Period
Korer was a kingdom of sailors and fishermen from the Thunder Delta
and long considered Joranit the kingdom's most valuable treasure.
The Koreri welcomed all people to trade in their realm and Joranit's
markets flourished again.
The Koreri were
also afflicted with a national case of wanderlust. People and ships
from Korer and Joranit explored the shores and islands of the White
Sea. Karasali traders penetrated deep into the Pentan tundra establishing
trade with the fearsome Kotun demi-giants. Some captains, sailing
ever further north, claimed to have reached the land of the Luatha.
The merchants
and explorers of Joranit set up many settlements on the coasts of
the White Sea. White Harbour, where the Cold Line reaches the sea
is one of them. Giant's Swing on the Erecheneg River is another.
In 111918 a
trading fleet from the Ygg Isles arrived and the people marvelled
at their wolf ships. In 111920 the Ygg Islanders were destroyed
in a sea battle off of Keravero after plundering Bavero and Surkenimero.
In 112066 the
Khordavic phalanxes once again marched through Karasal and the kingdom
of Korer fell to Emperor Kewetdevsus's armies. This time, the Quartz
Phalanx failed to storm the walls of Joranit and the shifting of
NourTar the Giant made the Dara Happans happy with the eastern portion
of the region.
112070 -
112160 The Twice Blessed Period
With the fall of Korer in 112070 Joranit again found itself under
siege. The priests of Joran took hold of Joran's Spear and twisted
it. NourTar cried out and shifted beneath the earth frightening
the Dara Happans. They signed pacts of peace with the Jorani and
contented themselves with holding the hinterlands. Remembering the
aid provided by Twice Blessed during the siege, the Jorani joined
the new kingdom. With the Empire distracted warring with Carmania,
the armies of Twice Blessed cleared the Dara Happans from the Joranit
hinterlands.
The Age of War,
though not directly involving Twice Blessed, was a lean time for
Joranit. Trade stopped flowing as the two great empires clashed
for over three generations. Joranit's traditional markets on the
Oslir and Acros were barred them by Birini galleys, their markets
in Dolebury and the Sweet Sea were barred by Carmanian barges. The
only commodities that interested the rest of Peloria were Kotuni
mercenaries and Jorani whale oil.
The Dragonkill
was a disaster, unprecedented in Pelorian history. And it provided
an opportunity for those realms still strong to profit from those
weakened.
Or so the theory
went.
Over a period
of ten years Twice Blessed sent many raiders and invaders into Dara
Happa with little success. Emperor Alenvus held off the invaders,
captured the raiders and managed to expand his realm in every other
direction at the same time.
In 112157, A
procession of Darseni Grandmothers passed through Karasal. Kamada
the Furious was a Darseni seer who foresaw great changes in the
area. They met with the leaders in city and town. They spoke with
the priests and the priestesses. Finally, they passed through Joranit
and then into the White Sea. When they returned all of the leaders
in Karasal rose up and announced their allegiance to the Deneron
Council. The Overseer of Joranit was named King of Karasal once
again and joined with Darsen and Naveria in the Old Ones Alliance.
The hosts of Twice Blessed were evicted, the Circle of Elders was
invited to return to their tundra and the people all turned to their
temples.
112160 - 112169 The Old Ones Alliance
The brief period of the Old Ones Alliance was one of deep religious
rediscovery. The heroes of the realm travelled deep into the hero
planes and rediscovered many lost myths and lores. People still
speak of the whaling season in 112168 as the most abundant in history.
In 112162 Kamada's
visions became reality as the Carmanian Empire enacted an old ritual
called the Carmanian March. The Old Alliance watched impotent as
the Carmanian conquered a wide swath of territory and split them
from Dara Happa. In 112167 the Dara Happans destroyed the Carmanian
host.
In 112169 Joranit
lost its sovereignty for the last time. The Alliance called on the
Carmanians to help them against a ravaging Dara Happan host. The
Carmanians were quick to respond.

Shah Cartavar
was a monster and his forces ravaged Karasal in a manner reminiscent
of the Spolites. His Overseer took over the old Spolite Quarter
and refurbished the Black Tower turning it into a Carmanian keep.
Unlike the Spolites, the Carmanians did not deface the local temples,
instead building their own in the Carmanian Quarter.
Joranit was
happy to see the death of Cartavar and the ascension of Bisoshan
the Great. Bisoshan's rise led to a new era of prosperity for Joranit,
trade flowed freely again from the Sweet Sea to the Acros, from
the White Sea to the Oronin. Karasali merchants penetrated down
the Janube and returned with tales of Sog City and the wizardry
of the far west. Fronelan traders made the long journey to Joranit
and eagerly established markets in the city. Soon Fronelan chargers
were sold next to Kotun slaves.
The chapter
houses of Malakinus and St Crocher date from this period; the former
brought with the conquering armies, the latter with the Fronelan
traders.
An old thing
reappeared in the world in 112220; the Living Rufelza was reborn
into the body of a street waif and led a liberating army out of
Rinliddi to sweep across Carmania.

In 112238 the
last Carmanian host in Karasal was defeated by the Lunars before
the gates of Elz Ast. The people of Joranit took to the streets
to welcome Teelo Estarra as She strode through the city. She declared
all of the city's slaves to be freedmen; this is now called the
1st Manumission. Many of those freed slaves joined the Select and
helped found the Lunar Quarter. Many more joined the Goddess' army
and marched to war for Her.
The Lunar made
many changes to Joranit. They founded a quarter for the Select.
They razed much of the Carmanian Quarter, leaving little more than
a ghetto, and built a new palace to house Marorlus FinEstu, the
new Satrap of Karasal. Before the palace the new nobles, those created
by Our Father and Yelmgatha built their compounds. The FinEstu built
a stadium before the walls and the area about it became known as
the New City. The Lunars built a new fortress on the harbour - called
the Military Quarter - to house their garrisons and their warships.
Joranit knew
prosperity like never before. Not only did the trade flow but it
was now the centre of administration and rule for a vast slice of
the Empire. Tradesmen and clerks flooded into the city. The New
Nobles built grand palaces for themselves while the old nobles did
their best to keep pace. Eolian mercenaries passed through and the
Empire based several regiments in the Military Quarter, both recruiting
centres and training establishments.
New gods were
introduced and old ones resurrected. The Empire's sorcerers, the
Makabeans, took over the Prow Keep to be their administrative centre
and junior college.
Goddess rises
In 112304 the
Salt Diamond incident caused the Eolian trade to be suspended and
many of the old nobles lost their holdings in when the Satrap DemiTros
FinEstu seized everything belonging to anybody from Twice Blessed.
Thirty years later, the aged Satrap lay dead, killed by an Eolian
merchant. Three hundred Jorani died in the resulting purges, ordered
by AtheraKrus, DemiTros' son and heir.
